Third DOWNTON ABBEY Movie Confirmed: ‘Final Film’

By Movieguide® Contributor

DOWNTON ABBEY will get a third and “final” movie, actress Imelda Staunton confirmed.

“There will be the final film—there you go,” Staunton, who played Maud Bagshaw, said in an interview with BBC Radio 2.

Deadline reported, “Staunton’s comments followed a report in The Sun on Wednesday, which claimed that the third movie will film at Highclere Castle over the summer and premiere next year.”

According to The Sun, Paul Giamatti will return for the final movie.

“Downton fans will recognise Paul from the last time he starred in DOWNTON ABBEY in the 2013 TV series, playing Harold Levinson, the brother of the Countess of Grantham. But getting him back is still something of a coup for the creative team because since then his career has seen him become even more in demand. That’s only going to increase since he was nominated for his Best Actor Oscar. But he has now committed to being a part of the new DOWNTON film,” The Sun reported.

Highclere Castle also hinted that the show might return on social media last month.

“Breaking news…📰📽️ ‘If you have to keep a secret, you must keep it secret that you have a secret to keep’😉🤭,” the caption read.

Many fans enthusiastically responded to the announcement.

“Crying happy tears!! ❤ Cannot wait for more Downton. There will never be a show I love more. Watched the entire series while getting chemotherapy and it was the perfect distraction. Visited Highclere castle with my hubby and mom afterwards. Ready for more 👏 🎥 🎞️,” one follower wrote.

“I am SO SO SO happy, Downton is my comfort show. Week made 🥲 wonderful news for the Highclere family and staff 🙏,” another fan commented.

The last two DOWNTON ABBEY movies found success at the box office.

“DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA grossed nearly $93M worldwide, while the first movie made $195M in 2019, according to Box Office Mojo,” Deadline reported.

Movieguide® praised A NEW ERA’s “Strong moral worldview refuting infidelity and caring for one’s family and friends” while cautioning about its “Romantic values such as following your dreams and acting on your feelings.”

There are also rumors that the show will return for its first season since 2015. Movieguide® reported:

To the delight of millions, filming for a new season of DOWNTON ABBEY has begun, marking the show’s first season since 2015.

“Filming has been going on for a few weeks now, it is all very, very secret,” a source working on the project told The Daily Mail. “There are people working on it who have seen secrecy like it. [They] have been made to sign non-disclosure agreements so that they don’t give the game away but there is a lot of excitement at the return of DOWNTON.”

“It was such a huge success before and there are so many more stories to be told, it seemed such a shame not to be able to make more of it but they’ve made it happen,” the source continued.

While this is the TV show’s first update since 2015, the series has progressed since then with the release of two movies. These movies have upped the already stellar production value and continued the themes of family and positive references to Christianity.
