Republican Values Drive TV Ratings

Want to make a hit television show?

You might want to make something that appeals to Republicans and conservatives.

Republican voters are more likely to support hit shows on TV than Democrats, months of data from the leading media research company, Experian Simmons, reveal.

According to the company’s research, the favorite shows of Republican voters were such big hits as Glenn Beck, The Amazing Race, American Idol, V, NCIS, The Mentalist, Dancing with the Stars, and Desperate Housewives.

Meanwhile, Democratic voters preferred non-traditional, leftist, dark, and edgy shows with much lower ratings like Keith Olbermann, Mad Men, Dexter, 90210, Brothers & Sisters, 30 Rock, and Breaking Bad.

For example, Mad Men “scores through the roof” with Democrats but gets very weak ratings from Republicans as their favorite show.

“The big shows with mass appeal tend to have above-average scores from Democrats and Republicans but with higher concentrations of Republicans,” John Fetto, senior marketing manager at Experian Simmons, said. “Looking at the Democrats’ side, I don’t mean to make light of it, but they seem to like shows about damaged people. Those are the kind of shows Republicans just stay away from.”

Concludes James Hibberd of The Hollywood Reporter, “The TV industry is populated by liberals, but big-league success may require pleasing conservatives.”
