The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and other news media outlets have been asking the question, Why 3-D? They’ve come up with some interesting answers.
There’s no doubt that charging more for 3-D is attractive to theaters, but, having been involved in several of the meetings at Panavision and Disney about the transition to 3-D, it is important to note that the real reason for 3-D is to protect movies from pirating. It is the same clunky system as the 1950s with some improvements, but the use of the polarized glasses means that it’s almost impossible for some low tech, movie pirate to produce a copy in the theater.
There are better 3-D systems that are totally software generated and do not require glasses. However, they are not low tech, pirate proof. So, as long as Hollywood wants to make money, they will keep making more and more 3-D movies requiring polarized glasses.
