REVIEW: Several ski areas near Los Angeles are well known, like Big Bear, Mountain High, and Mt. Baldy. Arguably the best is a little known area called Mt. Waterman in La Cañada. As one of my sons said when we skied there, “This is real skiing.”
For those that are good skiers, the lower part of the mountain has some truly expert areas with challenging opportunities. Since the snow was excellent this year, Mt. Waterman has been able to stay open longer, as have all the areas in Southern California.
For many years, Mt. Waterman was closed. Two brothers who had grown up in La Cañada purchased the ski resort. Just as they did so, however, Route 2 was put out of commission by fires and floods. Even with an extra eight minutes added for a longer drive, it is the closest ski area to Los Angeles, the Valley, and the Westside, with great challenging runs.
The whole area is a family affair. Everything is operated on a family time frame, rather than the clock. And, the parking lot is small. That said, it is a delightful place and highly recommended.
