SLEEP WITH ME is a low-budget study of what happens when the marital commitment is made in a world where commitments are shakey at best. Eric Stoltz, Meg Tilly and Craig Sheffer turn in deft, naturalistic performances as a trio of friends from college. When the two who have been living together take the plunge and finally marry, the third is left with the love he never expressed. Adultery is the result, and the three are left to hash out the effects within the context of a community of friends that does not have any ready answers. This is not a world where adultery is the norm but where, more tragically, confusion is.
SLEEP WITH ME is an incredibly well-acted, accessible movie. The camera work is done with a combination of hand-held film and black and white video, making the action seem genuine and immediate. The plight of these members of “Generation X” is not romanticized or idealized in any way, and the issues of this particular trio and their friends are portrayed as being the result of a generation lost in its lack of moral definition. The massive amount of offensive language, combined alcohol and marijuana use and partial nudity, will keep most viewers away, but the movie makes a salient point: when people have nothing to be faithful to beside their own desire and ability to do what is right, they will inevitably fail.
