In the Stephen King thriller LAWNMOWER MAN, scientist Larry Angelo experiments with Virtual Reality to conquer mental retardation. In his experiments, Larry uses Jobe, who cares for lawns in the neighborhood. Jobe is a ward of Father McKeen, the local Catholic priest. He receives regular penances for his “misbehavior,” which results from his 80 IQ. After several sessions, Jobe’s intelligence increases greatly. Larry’s Project Director, Timms, reports to the Executive Director, as Jobe begins to understand his psychic abilities. Timms switches Jobe’s drugs to create aggressive behavior. Enraged, Jobe turns his hatred on Father McKeen, engulfing the priest in flames. Later, Jobe turns his industrial lawnmower on an abusive father. Finally, Jobe tries to meld his mind into the mainframe computer so he can control the lives of all. Larry explodes the lab to try to destroy Jobe. Does he?
Although it is a strong reminder that knowledge without wisdom is a dangerous thing, LAWNMOWER MAN is a mediocre film, highlighting the breakdown in creativity and common sense in Hollywood. Furthermore, it overflows with obscenity, violence, graphic fornication, nudity, New Age phenomena, drug abuse, and Christian bashing.
