SAMMY

SAMMY is a fine evangelical drama about a crippled boy who hopes to become a veterinarian, so he takes home every animal. His latest acquisition is four kittens. Sammy’s older brother, Matt, warns him that Dad won’t let them have more pets. They find homes for all of the kittens except one, who Sammy names “Moses.” When Dad discovers Moses, Matt gets blamed, since he is held responsible for Sammy. It is soon revealed that the father, Tom, turned away from God when Sammy was born crippled. When Tom learns that Sammy prayed to receive Christ, Tom insists that he will only be disappointed later. Eventually, pressures put upon Matt prove too much, and he blows up at Sammy. Sammy sets out for the junkyard in search of a radio for his brother. Disaster strikes when they get locked in the trunk of a car, destined to be crushed the next day. The hours of fear and worry bring each member of the family to the end of themselves.@@@SAMMY is a bold Christian film, portraying difficult family conflicts and crises of faith. It is dated, but competently acted. On the whole, however, SAMMY is a very entertaining and challenging film.
