However, Mitty’s transition from being fearful to being adventurous is too sudden. Thus, the movie needs better character development. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY also has some brief crude content, so caution is advised.

Ben Stiller plays Walter Mitty, who dreams of grand adventures but is too fearful to fulfill them, in THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY. THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY has wonderful music and is visually arresting, but seems to lack good character development, which is the essence of the movie’s script problem.
Walter Mitty works for Life Magazine in the negative assets department. Arriving to work one day, Mitty finds out that Life Magazine has been acquired and drastic cuts will be made, including ending the print edition. Sean O’Connell is Life’s most prized photographer and his image will be the image on the last print edition of Life. O’Connell has sent Mitty the roll of his negatives, but Mitty can’t find the one image O’Connell dedicated for the last edition, negative number twenty-five.
Ted Hendricks is transitioning the company into its new online phase. He tells Mitty that, if he doesn’t find the lost negative, he’ll be fired. Mitty asks his coworker, Cheryl, for her help. Having an eye on her for some time, Mitty daydreams of their life together in the future. When Cheryl tells Mitty he should go do whatever it takes to find Sean O’Connell and the image, he decides to take action. This is the first time in Mitty’s life that he actually has actually done something adventurous rather then just dreamed about it.
THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY has a moral worldview with Walter supporting his family. Walter is deeply connected with his father. After his father dies, he feels he needs to support his family. The movie stresses the importance of family, but at the same time, this is a family that’s suffered a breakup. Mitty has never been on an adventure, and he is encouraged by his romantic interest to do so. In fact, he admits she’s his inspiration.
The best aspects of THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY are the music and the visuals. Mitty’s transition from being fearful to being adventurous is too sudden. The movie seems to lack good character development. Also, Mitty’s daydreams are very odd and have awkward transitions. Overall, the movie seemed like Stiller’s artistic pet project to emphasize adventure, but the storyline should have been tightened up.
