7TH HEAVEN Actor on New Family Program DATE MY DAD

Many know Barry Watson as Matt Camden from 7TH HEAVEN, on which he starred in for 10 years. Now, Barry has traded being the oldest teenager with being a father, both in real life, and in his new TV show DATE MY DAD, premiering on UP TV June 2nd. DATE MY DAD is about a widower, former baseball pro and single dad of three girls pressured to start dating again by his daughters.
In an interview with Movieguide®, Barry told us what attracted him to this new show.
“For me, being a father in real life now, and getting older as an actor, I’ve been sort of looking for a single father concept show that really portrayed a single father in the right way. Not just a bumbling idiot, or perfect.”
“So, when I read DATE MY DAD, I couldn’t stop reading it. I thought some of the scenes were just so sweet, and yet funny at times as well. I think that when it comes to television nowadays, there’s not really anything like DATE MY DAD other there, that a whole family can sit down and watch. I think kids are thrown into the Nickelodeon and Disney channel world, and the adults are watching the same procedural show, but on different networks.”
As to what’s different now, Barry said, “It’s been a while since I was in 7th Heaven. The difference is I was playing one of the kids [in 7th Heaven], but now I’m playing the father. So, it’s really come full circle for me. But, it feels right. I think everybody is looking for a show like this, that they can maybe sit down and share with their parents, and everybody get a little something out of it.”
Barry’s personal connection to the TV show stems back to a time in which he was a single dad.
“I spent a little bit of time as a single father a few years back with my two boys,” he said. “So, I think that whether you’re single mother or a single father, life’s messy and family’s messy, and that’s ok. That’s how we learn as human beings, through our mistakes and some of the messy things in life.”
