More Motion Picture Child Rape

By David Outten, Production Editor

While Hollywood is making more high quality family films that do well at the box office, there are those in Hollywood that are trying to stretch the boundaries of motion picture depravity. The movie HICK, starring Alec Baldwin, features the brutal rape of a 13-year-old girl named Lily who spends a good part of the movie flaunting her sexuality to the kind of men no respectable girl would want to come near. Lily leaves home after her thirteenth birthday party, held in a bar, where she receives a gun as a gift. The movie is supposedly full of alcoholism, drug abuse, sex, and vulgarity.

As bad as the movie apparently is, it begs the question, “Who did the filmmakers think would want to spend $10 to see this?” Anyone anxious to see this movie would make a good suspect for police looking for child molesters. That’s not a large audience segment.

In Philippians 4:8, Christians are told, “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”

MOVIEGUIDE® encourages Hollywood to serve the huge audience hungry for wholesome, uplifting entertainment. We do our best to discourage the production and distribution of vile movies like HICK.

While the six major studios are unlikely to pick up and distribute HICK, they have distributed extremely vile movies like BORAT, HANGOVER and JACK A**. Sony recently released BUCKY LARSON: BORN TO BE A STAR in 1,500 movie theaters. The movie, about the child of two porn stars seeking to become a porn star himself, averaged only two ticket buyers per theater showing.

The real concern is that one of the subsidiaries of the major studios, that often distribute vile independent movies, might consider distributing HICK. The good news is that some of these subsidiaries are learning that independent Christian movies are more profitable than independent vile movies.

There is good reason for Christians to have an advocate in Hollywood. Many groups lobby Hollywood to use their influence to promote immorality.

Movieguide® and the Christian Film & Television Commission® work together to encourage the production and distribution of wholesome entertainment and to discourage the production and distribution of vile entertainment. We are your advocate in Hollywood, and we are extremely grateful for your prayers and support.
