“To infinity and beyond!” – Buzz Lightyear, TOY STORY.
Like the beloved character Buzz Lightyear, Disney has a launch date set for the horizon for the long-awaited streaming service.
Titled “Disney+,” the site will launch on November 12, 2019. Disney + is set to be cheaper than that of its other streaming competitors with monthly subscriptions at $6.99 and will offer original content based off characters and stories that fans know and love.
A live-action rendition of LADY AND THE TRAMP and Jon Favreau’s live-action STAR WARS series THE MANDALORIAN will pave the Disney+ lineup. Disney also promised several other content options coming in the first year which include, exclusive behind the scenes footage of FROZEN 2, a series based off of HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL, Pixar short films and many projects with character spins offs like MONSTER’S INC.
Disney+ will showcase native content as well with 500 movies and 7,000 TV episodes ready to go on launch day. Reportedly, Marvel movies will make their way to Disney+ after Disney’s contract with Netflix ends at the close of the year. Additionally, with the merger of Fox, Disney+ will now offer beloved classics like THE SOUND OF MUSIC and THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
Disney also owns other streaming platforms like both Hulu and ESPN+ but asserts that they will not cross-pollinate. Instead, Disney might choose to offer a subscription bundle with all three options. Hulu will be the keeper of more adult-oriented content and some new Marvel-related projects while ESPN Plus will remain true to sports coverage.
Disney CEO Robert Iger tweeted sharing the look of the new platform.
