The third season of the controversial show 13 REASONS WHY debuted last month and addressed major social issues. They include bullying, sexual assault, suicide, abortion, steroid abuse, the opioid crisis, gun violence, sexual identity, and illegal immigration.
Initially, 13 REASONS WHY told the story of Hannah Baker, a young woman who was raped by a boy named Bryce Walker. She blames him and 12 other people for her suicide, leaving behind tapes explaining why they were at fault.
The third season’s storyline follows Walker trying to find redemption for his wrongdoings, while showing the repercussions of his actions on all the other characters. The second season shows Walker going to trial for Baker’s rape. Ultimately, he’s given probation.
“The Bryce through line allows the 13 REASONS WHY showrunner, Pulitzer Prize–winner Brian Yorkey, and his writers to double down on what has been a theme in 13 Reasons all along: the idea that everyone is fighting a hard battle that may not be apparent on the surface,” Vulture reported.
Now, we see the core cast being investigated by the local police for Walker’s murder.
This season is narrated by a newcomer named Ani who befriends each character and is the keeper of all of their secrets. Throughout all 13 episodes viewers watch Ani meet with an investigator. Each episode is devoted to a specific character and how they could have been involved in Walker’s murder.
Even though 13 REASONS WHY tries to tell the story of Walker’s redemption, it instead focuses on the social issues and how each character grapples with them.
Though Netflix renewed the series for a fourth season, the network announced it would be the final series of the drama.
According to Deadline:
Eight months after preventing Tyler from committing an unthinkable act at Spring Fling, Clay, Tony, Jessica, Alex, Justin, and Zach find ways to shoulder the burden of the coverup together while helping Tyler move toward recovery, but when the aftermath of a tumultuous homecoming game culminates in the disappearance of a football player, and Clay finds himself under police scrutiny, it’s up to a shrewd outsider to steer the group through an investigation that threatens to lay bare everyone’s deepest secrets.
The final season of the drama from Paramount Television and Anonymous Content will feature the core cast’s graduation.
