A Decade In Review: Movies That Speak To Families
By Allyson Vannatta, Staff Writer & Tess Farrand, Associate Content Editor
Let’s take a trip in the time machine. The year is 2010.
The royal weddings of Princes William and Harry aren’t on the radar. The first iPad hasn’t been released. Sharing photos via Instagram isn’t a reality, because it’s not invented yet.
But, one consistent factor for the decade to come is movies.
Since the 1980s, Movieguide® has held its annual Faith and Values Gala, which celebrates movies that edify biblical values. Below is Movieguide®’s list of Best Family Movies from the last decade.
2010 – UP
2011- TOY STORY 3
2012- SOUL SURFER
2013 – ICE AGE: CONTINENTAL DRIFT
2014- FROZEN
2015- HEAVEN IS FOR REAL
2016- HOME
2017- MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN
2018- THE BOSS BABY
2019- THE GRINCH
Several common themes and life lessons run throughout these movies.
In Pixar’s UP, a curmudgeon learns that opening his heart to others helps him heal from deep loss.
TOY STORY 3 follows familiar characters like Woody and Buzz, as they overcome fear to adjust to a new season of life.
In SOUL SURFER, the main character, Bethany Hamilton perseveres in her goals despite losing her arm in a shark attack.
FROZEN extols the love siblings can have for one another, despite different personalities.
HEAVEN IS FOR REAL and MIRACLES FROM HEAVEN honor the fact that God works in the lives of everyday people.
Psalm 107:2 reads, “Let the redeemed of the LORD tell their story— those he redeemed from the hand of the foe (NIV).”
Looking back on the past 10 years, we hope you’ll choose to focus your attention on the movies that made you stop and think deeply about love, loss, and the redemption found in Jesus Christ.
Surely, the Hollywood landscape looks different than it did in 2010 but let that cause you to thank God for our ability to create and refine through storytelling.
Join us in prayer that the next 10 years will bring even more worthwhile stories to our lives.
Stay tuned for the 2020 Movieguide®’s Award nominees!
