SONIC THE HEDGOG continues to score in the top 5 weekend box office slots, proving that families crave wholesome and funny movies that children will love.
SONIC released in the U.S. on February 14, 2020, to the tune of $60 million, a rarity for a family-friendly movie on Valentine’s Day. SONIC continues to bring in millions of dollars in tickets sales to date, three weeks since its release. At the time of this reporting, the movie has made more than $265 million.
Comparatively speaking, SONIC’s numbers won’t dazzle anyone who’s seen the revenue from THE LION KING (2019) or FROZEN 2. However, it’s encouraging that Paramount, SONIC’s distributor, is scoring with a family-friendly flick.
According to Movieguide®’s review:
SONIC actress Tika Sumpter affirmed that families could enjoy the movie in an interview with Movieguide®.
“This [movie] is something that my daughter can go watch, [and] she has watched. She’s only 3 and she literally sat still the entire time,” Sumpter said. “That’s how much action- and jam-packed adventure is in it for all ages.”
SONIC also stars an actor whom Christian viewers might recognize- Neal McDonough (PROJECT BLUE BOOK).
McDonough and his wife came to the 27th Annual Movieguide® Awards and talked about how McDonough’s faith in God has always kept him on the straight and narrow in Hollywood.
“Everyone has ups and downs no matter what it is,” said the actor. “But, if you have an unwavering faith in God and then family, it makes life a whole lot more enjoyable.”

Another reason for SONIC’s box office success could be the fandom and the nostalgia of video gamers. SONIC’s star James Marsden admitted on GMA that his love for Sonic stemmed from the video games in his youth.
