A Trip to Neverland Now Requires an Adult, Disney Plus Pulls Children’s Classics PETER PAN, THE ARISTOCATS

In addition to adding content warnings before classic movies last October, Disney recently banned PETER PAN, DUMBO, THE ARISTOCATS, and SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON for viewers 7 years old and younger.

The family favorites are still available to adults. However, children’s accounts no longer carry the classic movies due to their breach of new ‘content advisories.’

The Daily Mail reported: “Parents have been left dumbfounded after trying to watch the films on Disney’s £5.99-per-month service. One said: ‘I wanted to watch Peter Pan with my daughter, but I couldn’t find it anywhere. Then I realized they had all gone – they had been removed from the kids’ accounts. It was shocking.’”

PETER PAN features a Native American tribe referred to as “redskins” by Pan and the Lost Boys. Disney barred THE ARISTOCATS for its depiction of a Siamese cat named Shun Gon, who has slanted eyes and plays a piano with chopsticks. The company accused SWISS FAMILY ROBINSON of the inappropriate image of its “yellow face” and “brown face” pirates. Finally, DUMBO was criticized for its portrayal of African-Americans on Southern plantations and offensive musical lyrics like “When we get our pay, we throw our money all away.”

Even on the adult profiles, Disney+ displays content warnings before these movies.

“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together,” the disclaimer before each movie reads. “Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”

With the addition of their streaming service Disney+ in 2019, the company has made a substantiated effort to re-evaluate its vast library of content, including movies, theme park rides, and TV shows.
