Hollywood A-Lister Refuses to Film in Texas Due to New Abortion Law

THE WIRE creator David Simon announced that he would no longer film upcoming episodes in Texas due to its new legislation regarding abortion.
“If an employer, this is beyond politics. I’m turning in scripts next month on an HBO non-fiction miniseries based on events in Texas, but I can’t and won’t ask female cast/crew to forgo civil liberties to film there. What else looks like Dallas/Ft. Worth?” Simon wrote on Twitter.
While Simon assured that his decision to not film in Texas was not based on politics, the Hollywood A-lister made it clear he opposed the Texas law.

“My response is NOT rooted in any debate about political efficacy or the utility of any boycott,” he said. “My singular responsibility is to securing and maintaining the civil liberties of all those we employ during the course of a production […] if even one of our employees requires full control of her own body and choices — and if a law denies this or further criminalizes our attempt to help her exercise that control, we should have filmed elsewhere.”
“I believe in a woman’s right to abort an embryo or fetus should that be her personal choice,” he said in a separate Tweet.

Simon and HBO were met by a wave of backlash from those who supported the Texas abortion law.
“I will be boycotting HBO and any other broadcast that feels they have to boycott any state that passes laws that protects all human rights, not just women, but babies as well. I guess David Simon believes in murdering children. And that human life isn’t important to him,” one user said.

The Supreme Court declined to hear a case that would have prevented a pro-life Texas law from going into effect. As of Sept. 1, 2021, Texas is now home of one of the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country, much to the celebration of pro-life people around the country.
The law says that if a heartbeat of a child can be detected, then it cannot be aborted. A heartbeat can often be detected as early as six weeks in-utero.
Though the law was passed in May, several challenges pushed it to the Supreme Court, which did not act on it before the deadline.
Hollywood often glamorizes abortion, but the harsh reality is that abortion is an emotionally and physically painful process that causes trauma for years to come. Thankfully, there are pro-life movies that depict the truth about abortion — and about God’s unfailing redemption and love.
