Blake Shelton Talks Faith, Fatherhood and the Future of His Career

After 28 No.1 hit songs and a successful career, country icon and THE VOICE judge Blake Shelton said he is excited to focus on family.
“What I’ve been looking forward to doing for the last four or five years … is eyeing that timeline, that part of my career, where I just need to start stripping some things away,” Shelton, 45, told Country Countdown USA host Lon Helton. “You gotta get some life in there, and marrying Gwen [Stefani], I’ve married into a family. She’s got three boys … and all of a sudden you go, there’s other stuff.”
Shelton and Stefani married last year after dating since 2015. Stefani already had three sons, Kingston, 15, Zuma, 13, and Apollo, 8, with her ex Gavin Rossdale.
Shelton said that he never questioned a commitment to the three boys, noting that his father set an example by taking care of his brother, Richie.
“The example that my dad set for me was that [child] was not even a consideration [in a romantic partnership]. You got three boys? Awesome! My dad did it. My dad raised me. I could do this. I didn’t know what I was signing up for, but I was all about signing up for it. And every day I’ve fallen in love with the boys as much as I do with Gwen,” he said.
Shelton also noted that Stefani’s faith in God first attracted him to her.
“I think honestly, looking back, that under the circumstances that Gwen and I fell in love with each other and got together was all the proof I needed,” he said. “She has such a strong faith in God. I mean, if Gwen was sitting here right now, she would go ‘God’ [then] ‘everything else.'”
“Just watching her and learning from her and learning how she thinks and how she treats people and how she just operates in her life, naturally I start seeing the God in everything, because she does,” he added.
Shelton said that Stefani’s helped him deepen his relationship with God—which is evident in his newer music with songs like “Bible Verses,” “Savior’s Shadow,” and “Jesus Got a Tight Grip.”
Although Shelton remains one of the most popular country artists today, he accepted that that might change one day.
“I’ve kind of always been prepared for when this ends and my songs aren’t getting played anymore,” he said. “And I learned to accept it a few years ago — maybe three or four or five years ago — that it’s coming … You have to be honest with yourself, and you can’t believe that this is gonna go on forever, because it’s not. … I want to make great records, and the moment that I feel like I’m really not that relevant anymore, I don’t think I want to [record] anymore … I’m not somebody that’s ever gonna beat my head against the wall, because this industry has given me way, way more than I ever deserved. And I know that, and I’m proud of that. And when it’s my time to make room for somebody else, the last thing I’m gonna do is kick and scream to keep my post … But whenever that is, look, there’s not one complaint that I could have. I couldn’t be prouder and happier.”
