Mary J. Blige Thanks God While Accepting Icon Award: ‘Without His Love, There’s None Of This’

Singer Mary J. Blige received an Icon Award at the 2022 Billboard Awards and took the time to thank God in her acceptance speech.
“I’m in a dream right now. Thank you so much,” Blige started her speech. “The way the world is now, I think people think icons are born that way. They become a legend overnight. But that is definitely not the case. It takes a lot of time, hard work, and a lot of surviving trial and error to achieve greatness.
“I’ve been on this journey for a long time, one that didn’t always look the way you see me now, one that is filled with a lot of heartache and pain,” Blige continued. “God helped me to channel those emotions and experiences into my music.”
“The message of my music has always been that we are not alone in our struggles. And I’m not alone now,” the singer said. “For so long, I was searching for a real love, but I finally found my real love, and that real love is me.”
Blige finished her speech by thanking those who are most important to her: “There’s no ‘I’ in team. So I want to thank everyone on my team for helping me. First up, my Almighty, My everything, my source, God. Because without His love and protection and guidance, there’s none of this!”
Previous recipients of the Icon Award include Celine Dion, Stevie Wonder, Prince, Cher, and Garth Brooks, among many other big names.
