ESPN Analyst Pauses Broadcast to Pray for Damar Hamlin: ‘We Lift Up Hamlin’s Name in Your Name’

Former NFL quarterback and current ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky recently took time to pray to God after an ambulance took Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin off the field.

“Maybe this is not the right thing to do,” Orlovsky said, before bowing his head in prayer. “It’s just on my heart that I want to pray for Damar Hamlin right now. I’m going to do it out loud, I’m going to close my eyes, I’m going to bow my head, and I’m just going to pray for him.”

Orlovsky’s bold proclamation of faith in God and the power of prayer came after Hamlin collapsed on the field. After attempting CPR for several minutes, an ambulance escorted Hamlin off the field.

Players of both teams and their coaching staff formed a circle to pray for Hamlin.

Later, reports said that the 24-year-old was in critical condition at a nearby hospital.

“God we come to you in these moments that we don’t understand, that are hard, because we believe that You’re God and coming to You and praying to You has impact,” Orlovsky prayed. “We’re sad, we’re angry, we want answers, but some things are unanswerable. We just want to pray, truly come to You and pray for strength for Damar, for healing for Damar, for comfort for Damar, to be with his family, to give them peace. If we didn’t believe that prayer … worked, we wouldn’t ask this of You, God. I believe in prayer, we believe in prayer, and we lift up Damar Hamlin’s name in Your name, Amen.”

People from around the world have gathered to pray for Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin, who went into cardiac arrest mid-game on Monday.

“Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest following a hit in our game versus the Bengals. His heartbeat was restored on the field and he was transferred to the UC Medical Center for further testing and treatment. He is currently sedated and listed in critical condition,” the Bills tweeted shortly after midnight on January 3.

Hamlin’s family said they will share updates on the 24-year-old “as soon as we have them,” and thanked fans and medical personnel for their support.

“On behalf of our family, we want to express our sincere gratitude for the love and support shown to Damar during this challenging time,” they said in the statement, which was shared by Hamlin’s friend and marketing rep Jordan Rooney. “We are deeply moved by the prayers, kind words and donations from fans around the country.”
