Elon Musk to Step Down as Twitter CEO, Hands Role to NBCUniversal’s Linda Yaccarino

Elon Musk announced on Friday that he would step down from the role as CEO of Twitter, replacing himself with Linda Yaccarino, former sales chief at NBCUniversal.

“I am excited to welcome Linda Yaccarino as the new CEO of Twitter!” Musk Tweeted on Friday. “@LindaYacc will focus primarily on business operations, while I focus on product design & new technology. Looking forward to working with Linda to transform this platform into X, the everything app.”

Yaccarino had previously been the sales chief at NBCUniversal and had been with the company for 12 years. Musk and Yaccarino had previously worked together when Twitter and NBCUniversal revealed a major renewal of their ad partnership.

“Thank you @elonmusk!” Yaccarino Tweeted in response to the news. “I’ve long been inspired by your vision to create a brighter future. I’m excited to help bring this vision to Twitter and transform this business together!”

“I see I have some new followers… I’m not as prolific as @elonmusk (yet!), but I’m just as committed to the future of this platform. Your feedback is VITAL to that future. I’m here for all of it. Let’s keep the conversation going and build Twitter 2.0 together!” Yaccarino Tweeted later on Friday.

While the change in Twitter’s leadership came with little warning, those that have followed Twitter since Musk’s takeover last year may remember that he announced he was looking for someone to take over the CEO position after a Twitter poll in December revealed more than 57% of users wanted him to step down.

Musk will remain CEO of Twitter for six more weeks as Yaccarino transitions out of her current role. He will then serve as executive chairman and CTO of Twitter.
