Why Hollywood Star Timothée Chalamet Sought Out Positive Role Amid ‘Cynical’ Age

Actor Timothée Chalamet recently revealed that he chose his role in the upcoming WONKA movie to be a part of positive, uplifting content.

“To work on something that will have an uncynical young audience, that was just a big joy,” Chalamet said. “That’s why I was drawn to it. In a time and climate of intense political rhetoric, when there’s so much bad news all the time, this is hopefully going to be a piece of chocolate.”

WONKA tells the story of the beloved Roald Dahl character in a much more uplifting way than the previous cynical iterations. While the previous movies explored Wonka’s cynical view of the world after making it to the top, the upcoming movie follows Wonka at the start of his chocolate business and the whimsical adventures he embarks on earlier in his life, such as meeting the Oompa Loompas.

“This is a Willy that’s full of joy and hope and desire to become the greatest chocolatier,” Chalamet said

WONKA is directed by PADDINGTON filmmaker Paul King and co-stars Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, and Olivia Colman. The movie is expected to perform well as recently, positive movies have outperformed their cynical counterparts at the box office,.

WONKA is set to debut in theaters December 15th. Check back for the full review of WONKA closer to release.

Movieguide® previously reported on Chalamet’s role in WONKA:

Warner Bros. confirmed that Oscar-nominated actor TimothéeChalamet will play the titular candy inventor Willy Wonka in the studio’s third adaptation of Roald Dahl’s beloved story.

Deadlinereportedthat the upcoming project would focus on Wonka’s life before opening his famous chocolate factory. Chalamet is known for a variety of roles, including INTERSTELLAR and LITTLE WOMEN.

The new adaptation includes musical numbers and dance routines that show a new side to Chalamet that fans have not yet seen on screen.

“We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is,” producer David Heyman, 58,saidin a previous interview with Collider. “It’s a prequel, it’s not a sequel. What makes Willy – when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he’s locked himself away?. . . It’s how does he get there? So, we’re playing around with that.”

Warner Bros.’s previous adaptations included 1971’s WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY featuring Gene Wilder, and 2005’s CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, which featured Johnny Depp.
