Christian artist Katy Nichole recently opened up about the inspiration behind her new song “Jesus Changed My Life.”
“I’ve seen a lot of God’s redemption in my life,” she said while appearing on THE CANDACE CAMERON BURE PODCAST. “And the way that He can redeem a life is something I think is so incredibly beautiful.”
Nichole then shared the story of a “dark season” in her life.
“I had back surgery in 2015 for scoliosis,” she explained. “I have really bad congenital scoliosis, which is actually a very rare form of scoliosis. So, I come out of this surgery and now I have metal rods and screws in my spine.”
Nichole’s recovery time was “about a year,” but she added, “I was in so much pain, so much pain right away.”
After the year was up, when Nichole was supposed to “be like the other kids, doing everything that I wanted to do,” she was still in pain and her doctors were unsure of the reason. Nichole saw many doctors and specialists, one of whom recommended she see a psychiatrist because she was “crazy” and “depressed.”
“Well, I was depressed!” Nichole said. “I was incredibly depressed at the time because of the chronic pain I was dealing with, and because of the amount of people in my life that were just being like, ‘Well, is it in your head or is it real?’ And I knew that it was real, but I was starting to question myself.”
Eventually, a doctor told Nichole they could remove the rods in her spine, but that it could potentially make her condition worse.
“And I was like, ‘I don’t care. I genuinely believe this is what has to happen,’” she recalled. “ I felt very connected and disconnected to God in that season because it was like, I knew that my God could do miracles … .but then at the same time, I was so frustrated and mad about my situation, angry at God.”
Nichole said she felt an “immediate peace” the day they set the surgery to remove the rods, but what really changed things was when she saw two rainbows that day.
“And these rainbows are just this immediate rush of ‘God’s about to do something,’” she explained. “Anytime I see a rainbow, I’m like, ‘God is showing up right now. He’s here and I see Him.’”
Nichole underwent two surgeries to remove the rods. Within a month, she was back on stage and the anger she felt about her condition was gone.
“Jesus changed my life,” she said. “He changed my heart, my character, changed my mind about who He is.”
“Jesus Changed My Life” is featured on Nichole’s debut album of the same name.
“Through some of the toughest battles I’ve faced in my life I’ve held onto Jesus and music. I’ve always felt like the Lord would bring me the right song in the right moment- I’ve had songs that brought healing in my darkest moments and made me feel less alone,” she wrote in an Instagram post about the album’s release. “I’ve seen the impact that music can have in my own life and I hope that my songs will do the same for you.”
Nichole’s career took off in 2020 after she started posting on TikTok.
“I posted every week. I made different videos. Some were music-related, others were not,” she told CHVN Radio. “This was just a regular week when I posted this video of a song called ‘God of Possible’. I didn’t have any expectations for this video. I didn’t know what it was going to do.”
“God of Possible” has since been streamed over 4 million times on Spotify.
