THE MIRACLE CLUB Is ‘All About Family,’ Director Says

 By Movieguide® Contributor

Director Thaddeus O’Sullivan recently sat down with Movieguide® to talk about his latest movie, THE MIRACLE CLUB.

“It is all about family for good or bad… and I found that exciting to focus on,” He shared with Movieguide. “The focus is very much on how they’ll [the main characters] deal with family life. And I love the idea of them getting away from the family as well at the beginning of the film.”

The film stars Laura Linney, Maggie Smith, and Kathy Bates.  A portion of Movieguide®’s review reads:

THE MIRACLE CLUB is a comedy set in Ireland and France in 1967. A lifelong dream for Lily and Eileen, two elderly women is to go to the sacred French town of Lourdes. However, their dream hits a speed bump when the previously estranged daughter of their best friend returns to Ireland from America. After 40 years away, Chrissie comes home to a cold welcome. Her presence reopens old wounds. However, she sets off with her one-time friends to Lourdes in search of peace.

Lourdes is a real location in France that is considered holy to the Catholic faith.  According to tradition, a 14-year-old girl named Bernadette Soubirous encountered the Virgin Mary there in 1858. Over 5 million people go on a pilgrimage there each year in search of a miracle and to have their prayers answered.

The Hollywood Reporter explained that in the film, each of the three main characters travel to Lourdes for a different reason.  Each woman needs her own miracle, which the film goes into deeper explanation of.  Of course, there journey is filled with trial and conflict along the way.  When the women finally arrived at their destination, Lily, played by Maggie Smith, shares a profound statement that touches the audience. “There’s always hope, isn’t there, even when you don’t completely believe.”

THE MIRACLE CLUB is currently playing in theaters nationwide.
