TRON: ARES Director Announces ‘Frustrating’ Strike Delays
By Movieguide® Contributor
TRON: ARES director Joachim Rønning revealed that the movie’s production will be delayed due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“The absolute best moments of my career have been watching an actor perform in front of the camera – taking the scene and the text to a higher place,” he posted on Instagram. “I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with amazing talent. It’s a huge part of why I’m a filmmaker. However, like myself, being an actor or a writer, means you’re a freelancer. And I can tell you, the constant uncertainty is not for everyone. To that end I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask for a better safety net.”
Rønning stressed that “everything starts with the story…and that means AI needs to be regulated,” adding that the technology is a “threat” to “all creatives.”
“Today was supposed to be our first day of principal photography on TRON: ARES (a movie subsequently about AI and what it means, and takes, to be human),” he explained. “Instead, we are shut down with over a hundred and fifty people laid off. It’s indefinite, which makes it exponentially harder for everyone.”
Rønning continued, “The AMPTP, SAG-AFTRA and WGA need to not leave the table until it’s done. This is Hollywood. We close deals for breakfast. Why do we suddenly have all the time in the world when every day is so precious? These tactics are extremely frustrating. It’s time for diplomacy so we can get back to work – under conditions that are fair to everybody.”
TRON: ARES will star Jared Leto, Evan Peters and Jodie Turner-Smith.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The new film will spend more time in the real world” and will “center on a sentient program that crosses over into the human world that is not ready for contact.”
Yahoo! reported that the third TRON movie has been in development since “the early days of TRON: LEGACY’s 2010 release.”
Directors and writers came and went, and Disney scrapped a 2015 production start date before it was greenlit in 2023.
Movieguide® has given positive reviews to the previous TRON movies. A portion of the review for TRON reads:
This masterful science fiction epic is not only very creative in execution, with engaging characters, and high production values, but also its worldview is strikingly biblical and Christian with a few odd bits of humanist thought awkwardly presented. Although there is brief language, some action violence, and some light romance, the movie may be enjoyed by older children (with some caution) and adults alike.
