By Movieguide® Contributor
Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood recently shared their secrets for a happy marriage.
“We’ve been at it for almost 18 years,” Yearwood said of their marriage, according to GMA.
The country music couple then jokingly interrupt each other, try to tell each other what to say — “He speaks for me,” Yearwood laughed — and sit in silence.
Brooks finally says the key to a successful marriage is one person being “miserable,” with Yearwood adding, “And I am not happy,” before the couple both burst out laughing.
“Why are they asking us?” Brooks says, with Yearwood replying, “I have no idea!”
The pair finally get serious about the secret to a happy and successful marriage.
“Marry your best friend,” Brooks and Yearwood say in unison.
When the couple first met, they were married to other people and built a strong friendship. After they both got divorced, Brooks and Yearwood started dating in 2000 and eventually tied the knot in 2005.
“I was telling somebody the other day, I feel so helpless because there’s nothing I can’t do without her,” Brooks said of his bond with Yearwood, per Us Weekly. “There’s nothing I can’t do with her, and there’s nothing I can do without her.”
He continued, “It’s a blessing and a curse that you feel so free and independent when she’s there and you’re so dependent when she’s not there. I don’t think she feels this way at all, but I know I do.”
Yearwood has also spoken about their marriage and the work they both put in to make it successful.
“People thought well, two celebrities who are in the same business, they won’t last,” she said. “I’m invested in this family, this is what I want for myself and no offense to anything else in my past, but I get it, I get it now and this is what I want. So we just earn it. Day by day.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Brooks and Yearwood’s marriage:
In their 16th year of marriage, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks shared how their love for one another deepened during the pandemic.
“We’re both very independent people who run our own ships. And sometimes when two people are driving two big ships, it can be difficult,” Yearwood, 56, confessed to Us Weekly.
Yearwood added that their marriage is “better now than ever.”
“I was always the person in relationships when things got difficult, I was really happy to just bail. I was good at that,” Yearwood said. “So in this situation, that’s not an option because this is the love of my life, you know? So you sit down, and you talk it through and, and that gets you better when you get to the other side.”
