Franklin Graham Talks Church Decline in America: Jesus ‘The Only Hope’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Franklin Graham recently joined Kirk Cameron on TBN to discuss the church’s declining influence in America and what Christians can do about it.
Kirk began by asking Graham, “What is giving you hope as you travel and meeting needs around the world. What gives you hope for Christianity?”
“It’s Jesus Christ. That’s the only hope that we have,” Graham replied. “Your politicians are not going to save this world, there’s not a government out there that’s going to save this world—it’s only Jesus Christ.”
Graham explained that, amid the brokenness experienced daily, Christians have an opportunity to share the gospel.
“When Jesus took our sins to the cross, the Bible says, and he teaches clear that with all sinned every one of us is guilty,” he explained. “But Jesus came on a rescue mission. He came to save us from sin, and so he died and shed his blood on a cross. He was buried for our sins. On third day, God raised his son to life. This is the only hope for the world…Jesus Christ.”
Graham also shared that churches have lost their way, resulting in cultural chaos.
“The problems that we see in this country is because the church has failed,” Graham added. “It’s failed miserably. We need to be speaking out on moral issues. We need to be taking a stand for the unborn…it’s like every demon in hell has been has been set loose, and we’ve got to stand firm for the word of God.”
The solution?
The church needs “to get back to the Bible and to believe the Bible…what we have today is so many people have compromised. They’ve compromised on the word of God. You see, God’s word doesn’t change…It’s the same yesterday, today, tomorrow, forever.”
This compromise has resulted in Christianity’s decline in America.
“Evidence is growing that Americans are becoming significantly less religious,” the New York Times reported. “They are drifting away from churches, they are praying less, and they are less likely to say religion is very important in their lives. For the first time in Gallup polling, only a minority of adults in the United States belong to a church.”
As people leave the church, “is the remedy to focus on evangelism getting out there maybe outside the church and preaching the word of God on the streets? Or is it preaching the word of God to our children in our own home and seeing the kitchen table is the as the field of evangelism or both?” Cameron asked.
“It’s all of it,” Graham responded without hesitation. “No question. We’ve got to preach the word in church. Parents have got to present the scriptures to our children…We need evangelism. We need to be out sharing the word of God with the lost.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Cameron and Graham:
While on his BRAVE Story Hour book tour Kirk Cameron paired up with Franklin Graham for an event on Saturday at Billy Graham’s Library in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The event attracted over 1,000 guests which contributed to two sold out book readings filled with faith, freedom, and family.
Trent Talbot, CEO and founder of Brave Books and Cameron’s publisher stated, “While most of the libraries on this tour have been opposed to us and made our lives as difficult as possible, it was such a treat to be hosted so graciously by Franklin Graham and the incredible staff at the Billy Graham Library.”
