I CAN, the true story of a talented softball player born with just one fully developed arm, impresses audiences with its inspirational messages in its limited release.
“I CAN, a First Capital Films (A FATHERS FIGHT) Kappa Studios (THE CHOSEN, THE SHIFT and HIS ONLY SON) movie made an impressive debut this past weekend, opening with a box office Top 10 per screen average and capturing the hearts of audiences nationwide,” First Capital Films and Kappa Studios reported in a press release.
“Opening in select theaters on September 22, the biopic…also garnered a notable 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes,” the studios reported.
I CAN portrays the true story of Katelyn Pavey. Although Katelyn only has one fully developed arm, she becomes an incredible All-American softball player. She was born out of both of her parents’ extramarital affairs. The weight of that starts to affect her family. They also face other trials amid Katelyn’s efforts to become an athlete, but they learn that God’s plan is ever-present in their lives.
I CAN earned a +1 rating from Movieguide®. Part of Movieguide®’s review reads:
I CAN has a strong Christian, moral worldview stressing God’s Grace and forgiveness. Katelyn is born to parents out of an affair, so her parents wrestle with guilt and shame. However, the movie shows how God can use weak, broken, sinful people for His good purposes. Ultimately, I CAN tells an uplifting, inspiring, heartfelt story that champions God’s faithfulness to help people overcome problems. The movie has many Christian elements like church and prayer. Circumstances point Katelyn to faith in God when she hits rock bottom. Due to some mature themes like death, an affair and injury, MOVIEGUIE® advises caution for younger children.
I CAN’s production studios gave 4,000 people free tickets to see the movie through Orphan Care Alliance, Dream Center Foundation, Boys and Girls Club of America, City Mission and other organizations.
Tyler Sansom, producer/director of I CAN, said, “Our goal has always been to get the message of overcoming out to as many people as possible. Opening weekend was a chance for thousands of people all over the country to hear that they, too, can overcome.”
The movie’s real-life inspiration, Katelyn Pavey, said, “We’re hoping that this film can reach others, enrich people’s lives and inspire as many people as we can and help them through their faith journey.”
