Bethany Hamilton Celebrates 10 Years Of Marriage: ‘God Surely Is Our Rock’

Surfer Bethany Hamilton shared details from her love story with husband Adam Dirks as the couple celebrates their tenth anniversary.
“We’ve been through so much together and God surely is our rock!” Hamilton posted on Instagram. “So how did a Kansas boy and a Kauai girl end up together?”
She shared that the couple met when Dirks came to Kauai to start a Young Life youth ministry and teach. After some friends’ encouragement, the pair agreed to go on a date.
Hamilton, the inspiration for Movieguide® Award winner SOUL SURFER, recalled, “Our first date included jumping off a cliff and trying to chat while swimming around–Adam doggy paddling and me mermaiding (ha!).”
“The true answer on how we met is that God was incredibly creative and gracious in helping us find each other,” she continued. “Our foundation of our faith, friendship, compatibility and our shared core values made it clear we were meant to join together in the ultimate adventure of marriage. And now we have 4 littles to show for it!”
The surfer went on to say, “the grace of God is truly our strength and hope,” adding, “I hope you can lean on God to be your rock in your marriage too.”
Earlier this year, the couple welcomed their fourth child and first daughter, Alaya.
“We are feeling really grateful to God for the blessing of family,” she posted on social media. “We are honored for this opportunity to raise our children, to love, serve, protect and guide them through life!”
Hamilton has previously spoken about the importance of family. In an Instagram post announcing her pregnancy, the surfer wrote, “Adam and I, and our whole fam, are so excited to be growing our family! I believe that life is a gift, and each and every life has value.”
She continued, “8 years in to motherhood, I’ve realized that I value my children more than I value ‘my’ time. I value my family more than I value other things like certain types of wealth or success. I believe a joy-filled family is wealth, and to know God, that is the most beautiful and precious wealth of all. We can pursue so many things in life, but what if we pursued what is right in front of us: the beautiful blessing that is family?!”

Movieguide® Award-Winning SOUL SURFER tells Hamilton’s story of losing her left arm in a shark attack at age 13. Now, the 31-year-old is raising her third son, Micah, whom she had in February, and said her “tricks and adaptations are getting better with each child.”
“When they are this young and have the wobbly head and need constant attention, nursing, diaper changes, tummy soothing, lots of sleep and of course smiles, kisses and more,” Hamilton wrote on Instagram. “I use my feet to help with diaper changing, lots of pillows with nursing, a baby carrier all throughout the day and tricky styles of holding to keep baby’s head up.”
Hamilton says that one key is to “keep moving forward, have lil breaks and keep it positive!”
She added: “Plus I remember I’ve done it before. And as a family we make it work!”
