More Detail:
COUNTRY HEARTS is a musical drama on UPtv about two sisters who get the offer of a lifetime from a major record label to take their country music careers to the next level, but one sister is reluctant to leave her husband for Nashville, and their father is having problems with his horse breeding business. COUNTRY HEARTS has a strong Christian, pro-family worldview, strong family scenes and several fairly good songs, but the plot is complicated by two too many subplots.
The movie opens during an approaching thunderstorm. Two sisters, Tori and June, and their country band are performing in a venue in their small town when the electricity goes out during the second song. A bigger problem occurs back at their family’s ranch when a bolt of lightning causes a fire in the small barn. Their father, Bones, a former rock star in a metal band, has to lead Tori’s horse, Bluebell, out of the barn, but he loses the expensive frozen stud samples he just bought for one of his mares. Meanwhile, Tori and June’s mother, a popular country singer, is still away on tour.
The next day, a Nashville record producer named Tony sees a video of the first song the sisters sang. He wants to sign them and their band to open for another country music star. It’s the opportunity Tori’s been seeking, but June is reluctant to start a Nashville music career that would take her away from her husband, Justin. However, she agrees to drive to Nashville with Tori and their guitarist, Luke, who has unrequited love for Tori.
Tori, June and Luke set out for Nashville in the truck. However, June gets a call from her husband, Justin, who tells them that Bluebell has a serious case of smoke inhalation from the fire. It’s clear to viewers that Justin made the call because he really doesn’t want his wife to have a music career like her mother. Tori, June and Luke forgo the Nashville trip and rush back to the family ranch so Tori can see to Bluebell’s wellbeing.
However, Tori still longs for a country music career in Nashville. Also, Luke gets jealous when Tori’s old flame returns to town after he suddenly left town two years ago. Meanwhile, June’s husband is keeping financial problems with his winery secret from her.
COUNTRY HEARTS has some strong, heartwarming family scenes between the father and his two daughters. Also, Lanie McAuley and Katerina Maria, who play Tori and June, sing several catchy, well-written country-flavored songs during the movie. That said, the script has two or three too many subplots. For example, there’s the romantic rivalry between Luke and the old flame. Also, Tori and her old flame, Barrett, have some unfinished business having to do with Barrett suddenly leaving town and never returning until now. Then, there’s the father’s problems regarding his horse breeding business, not to mention the smoke inhalation problems with Tori’s horse, a difficult pregnancy with another breeding horse the father owns, and the financial problems the sister’s husband is having with his winery. UPtv is releasing a sequel to COUNTRY HEARTS this coming Christmas, however, so everything unresolved is going to come to a head.
COUNTRY HEARTS portrays the Christian faith and the nuclear family in a strong positive light. The father prays several times in the movie. He also shows gratitude toward God for some blessings he and the family receives. COUNTRY HEARTS also has a strong pro-capitalist viewpoint where Tori, her father and her sister’s husband are working hard to make their businesses and careers become successful. COUNTRY HEARTS is also free of strong objectionable content.
