WNBA Champion Kelsey Plum Thanks God After ‘Brutal’ Year

By Movieguide® Contributor

Back-to-back Women’s National Basketball Association champion Kelsey Plum expressed her gratitude to God after a brutal year.

Plum was named a WNBA All-Star in the 2022 season. She was shooting 42% from the three-point line. However, 2023 she only shot 27.8%.

“This year’s been brutal,” Plum told Fox News Digital.

In March, Plum married NFL tight end Darren Waller. Just 11 days after the wedding, their world changed. Waller was traded from the Las Vegas Raiders to the New York Giants.

“I got married, my husband got traded across the country, and this season I started shooting like 15% from three. I was really struggling,” she added.

Amid the trials, Plum leaned on her faith.

“I think a lot of times when we talk about faith, it’s looking at something bigger than yourself. There’s purpose in it,” she expressed.

“Faith is things you can’t see but you know. I know that God has always had a plan for me, and I always just pray that He directs my steps and just makes it really clear of what I should do, where I should go,” Plum added.

She added that her relationship with God grows every time she goes through adversity.

“My relationship with Him has grown tremendously with just a lot of adversity that I’ve gone through, not just this past year but years prior,” Plum explained. “I know that this year was super brutal in a lot of differently ways – mentally, emotionally, spiritually. But at the same time, I think when you stick close to Him, you have a sense of confidence that you know that whatever’s thrown at you, you can handle because He’s given us the tools to handle it.”

“I know that’s Biblical. God never gives us something we can’t handle,” she continued. “I feel like that’s true. So, I just try to stay super close to that, and I won’t deviate because I know that’s what got me here and that’s what will continue to help me grow.”

After the Las Vegas Aces won their championship, Plum shared a photo on her Instagram and wrote, “DESTINY. BACK TO BACK. GLORY TO GOD. WORLD CHAMPIONS.”

Las Vegas Aces star Kelsey Plum is giving all the glory to God following the team’s WNBA Finals Championship win.

“I want to thank God,” she said at a press conference after the game. “This is not possible without Him.”

Plum continued, “This group has been through so much, but it’s here [pointing to her heart]. There was a lot of years that we weren’t so super, but you can’t build a super team in a couple months. It takes years. I’m just really proud of this group.”
