Lecrae Talks Living For God on New Podcast: ‘He’s Got a Plan’

Christian rapper Lecrae launched a podcast exploring the highs and lows of life to help people realize that they are living in vain if they’re not living for Christ.
“I found myself driving an S-Class Mercedes, living in a million-dollar home, with all these awards and plaques, more depressed than I’ve ever been in my life, more broken than I’ve ever been in my life,” Lecrae said in his inaugural episode. “That dispelled the myth that money and success equals happiness.”
This lifestyle vanity was fueled by trauma from the past, which taught him that success was the key to happiness rather than a relationship with Christ. Although his music has always been rooted in Christ, he strayed from that rock during his early years of fame.
“I found myself trying to matter every day and finding myself chasing and chasing, and more and more unfulfilled because the ladder just gets higher and higher,” Lecrae said. “It became dark for me.” He began to rationalize his behavior because “The Rock is playing my music right now. I gotta be somebody.”
“That’s the sad part because that’s so fleeting,” he continued. “When God has given us the opportunity to have eternal value and worth and purpose, and we’ll reject that.”
Having been brought to the despair that comes with that rejection and returned to a life centered on Christ, Lecrae wants to help others realize that only true joy and fulfillment can come from Christ.
“Literally goodness and mercy’s hunting you every day if you’re trusting in God,” he said. “You’re not just out here aimlessly flailing. He’s got a plan and you’re walking in the midst of it.”
To help others reach this understanding, the artist is holding nothing back and talking about the brokenness he has faced in his life, something Christians gloss over all too often.
“Life is hard and things are going to fall apart,” the podcast’s description says. “But the problem is that most Christians can’t be seen to have moments when they lose control or even struggle… Lecrae is going to dive into the hard things no one else will face and talk about what life looks like when you go off the deep end.”
“This show is not for perfect people or people who’ve never made mistakes,” the description continues. “This show is for the rest of us who are just trying to pick up the pieces and find a way forward with vulnerability and honesty.”
The rapper was recently nominated for two Grammys: “Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song” and “Best Contemporary Christian Music Album.”
“Can I be honest? My daughter was a tiny little girl the last time I went to the Grammys and she couldn’t go. As she’s become a young teen she’s dreamed of going,” he said of his nomination on Instagram. “Win or lose I’m honored to still be here and to create a memory with my baby girl. God is the greatest.”

The Grammy Award-winning Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae shared the painful but fruitful process of restoration in his newest full-length album, Restoration. Lecrae didn’t hold back as he shared what he learned from difficult seasons of trauma, clinical depression, and anxiety.
Alongside the album, the 40-year-old founder of Reach Records is also releasing a three-part YouTube series titled “The Road to Restoration,” and a book to be published Sept. 13, titled I Am Restored: How I Lost My Religion but Gained My Faith.
In an interview with The Christian Post, Lecrae said it was time for his audience to witness how his personal experience with restoration affected his music and character.
“I just think it was time,” Lecrae said. “I wanted people to be able to see who I was as a human being and that’s really a large part of my being restored, my faith being restored, my mental, emotional, spiritual self—finding healing there was being free to not be a caricature, being free to be all of myself and to let people see that for who I was.”
