YouTube Announces New Regulations For AI-Generated Content

By Movieguide® Contributor

YouTube is adding new rules to its platform surrounding AI-generated content, including requiring labels.

“We believe it’s in everyone’s interest to maintain a healthy ecosystem of information on YouTube. We have long-standing policies that prohibit technically manipulated content that misleads viewers and may pose a serious risk of egregious harm,” the video-sharing platform wrote in a blog post. “However, AI’s powerful new forms of storytelling can also be used to generate content that has the potential to mislead viewers — particularly if they’re unaware that the video has been altered or is synthetically created.”

The post explained that YouTube will soon “introduce updates that inform viewers when the content they’re seeing is synthetic,” adding, “Specifically, we’ll require creators to disclose when they’ve created altered or synthetic content that is realistic, including using AI tools. When creators upload content, we will have new options for them to select to indicate that it contains realistic altered or synthetic material.”

Other regulations include the removal of videos that don’t disclose AI use, as well as a feature that allows others to request the removal of AI content. Not all requests will be honored.

After a closer look at YouTube’s new rules, some have raised concerns about the language of the regulations.

The Verge reported that there is now “a strict set of rules for music and a looser, nearly unenforceable standard for everything else (including podcasts).”

“It doesn’t have the weight of the law, and it doesn’t have the advantage of being done out in the open,” Emily Poler, an attorney who specializes in copyright infringement, explained. “There are going to be situations where it’s really hard [for YouTube] to make a principled decision, and those [decisions] will be entrusted to make some reasonably low level employee at YouTube. I don’t think that’s a recipe for success.”

While YouTube is working to combat the rise of AI-generated content, the platform has also used the technology to improve its website, “including comment sorting, and integration with Bard for video analysis. More AI features will be launched in the coming months, including those designed to improve content moderation,” per Tom’s Guide.

With all the controversy surrounding AI, The Guardian interviewed Alison Lomax, YouTube’s London Chief, to understand the major video platform’s plan for the technology.

“We’re committed to embracing AI in a bold way,” Lomax told The Guardian. “But we have to do it really responsibly.” The focus is currently on “protecting artists’ integrity and creative expression.”

Lomax “says a project with Universal to create an incubator for artists to research AI’s potential shows the ‘strength of the partnership’ with the music industry,” The Guardian said.

New YouTube principles mention the site’s plans to “evolve together” with the music industry. Most of the guidelines aren’t hammered out, but YouTube chiefs have decided what the priorities are.
