CALL THE MIDWIFE is coming back for a thirteenth season.
PBS recently announced that the upcoming season of the popular hospital drama will premiere Sunday, March 17, at 8 p.m.
Not much is known about what’s in store for the characters of CALL THE MIDWIFE, but MSN reported a few details: “Lucille will not be returning for Season 13, but Dr. Turner and other beloved characters will be back, along with some new additions to the cast.”
Heidi Thomas, creator and writer of CALL THE MIDWIFE, said, “After so many years, our much loved regular characters are like family to me — and our wonderful fans so often tell me that they feel the same.”
Thomas added that Season 13 will be full of “beautiful moments that celebrate the young, the old, and the precious ties that bind them.”
Fans will also get an update in the upcoming Christmas special.
Some set pictures show what the special will explore, including characters Trixie and Matthew’s first Christmas as husband and wife.
“It’s their first Christmas together as a married couple, so it’s one of those awkward years when they’re trying to work out what they’re going to do,” actress Helen George told Radio Times. “And Trixie doesn’t really have any family apart from Nonnatus House, and of course he’s a Chelsea boy, so does he really want to spend Christmas in Poplar?”
CALL THE MIDWIFE’s Instagram account has been counting down the days to the special’s airing with posts teasing details.
“The Christmas Special begins two weeks before Christmas with Apollo 8 poised to circle the moon, but in Poplar more pressing matters bring our team back to earth,” one post reads. “There are returning newlyweds, surprise visitors, unexpected parcels and unusual presents. There is joy, love and community, but there are those who need it too…”
The post continued, “Over the next few weeks we’ll be bringing you all the news and stories from our Christmas Special as we prepare for the most wonderful time of the year. Stay tuned!!”
