Angel Studios to Present at CinemaCon Instead of Apple, Amazon

Angel Studios will present at CinemaCon this year instead of major studios like Amazon, Apple, Sony and MGM.

With several big hits like 2023’s SOUND OF FREEDOM on its resume, the studio shows its commitment to theaters by presenting at the event.

“In remarks made at CinemaCon 2023, Angel Studios made waves by launching its theatrical distribution division, spearheaded by industry veteran Brandon Purdie as its head of theatrical,” CinemaCon said. “In 2024, they return with a top-10 hit under their belts: the summer blockbuster SOUND OF FREEDOM, grossing over $184 million domestically.”

“Thrilled to unveil its upcoming slate, Angel Studios demonstrates a commitment to wide-ranging and compelling storytelling. As the studio continues to carve its path in the film industry, they remain dedicated to innovative storytelling and cinematic excellence, evident in the captivating projects that lie ahead,” the source continued.

SOUND OF FREEDOM was the summer blockbuster about child sex trafficking that grossed $250 million worldwide. At $184 million domestic, it was the 10th highest grossing movie of 2023, ahead of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART 1, INDIANA JONES AND THE DIAL OF DESTINY and even TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR. A unique marketing strategy, Angel Studios’ innovative Pay It Forward, allowed people to buy tickets for strangers and boost box office numbers.

An inside source explained by Sony isn’t presenting this year.

“The studio [Sony] fully expects to be back next year and is still fully invested in theaters (it doesn’t have a streaming service of its own),” the source revealed. “This year, it’s focused on getting movies ready for theatrical release after last year’s strikes. A CinemaCon presentation means racing out early looks at trailers for much of a studio’s theatrical slate, and Sony decided not to add to any post-production logjams.”

Angel Studios has a full slate of releases in 2024, starting with CABRINI, which arrives in theaters on March 8.

CABRINI will feature a star-studded cast with Cristiana Dell’Anna, David Morse, Giancarlo Giannini, John Lithgow, and others.

Other 2024 releases include SIGHT, coming May 24, BONHOEFFER, TUTTLE TWINS Season 2, THE WINGFEATHER SAGA Season 2 and YOUNG DAVID.
