Why Katy Perry Is Leaving AMERICAN IDOL: ‘Maybe Bring New Music’
By Movieguide® Contributor
Katy Perry is saying goodbye to AMERICAN IDOL after seven years on the singing competition show.
“I think this will probably be my last season for IDOL,” Perry said while appearing on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!
The pop star added that she loves the show “so much,” saying it has made her feel “connected with the heart of America.”
“I want to go and see the world and maybe bring new music,” Perry continued. “Let’s just say I’m creating space for my new wingspan.”
Fellow judge Lionel Richie weighed in on Perry’s exit from the show, saying, “We didn’t know about it, but it makes sense.”
“I have 400 years of stories and a life in the music business. I have things that I’ve done,” he continued. “And so when Katy says, ‘I want to go and create some stories,’ remember, she’s young. But the point is that you have to take some time and actually be an artist.”
There’s no word yet on who will replace Perry, but the Daily Mail reported that AMERICAN IDOL execs are thinking about Jennifer Lopez or Taylor Swift.
“They are just thinking about what would be the best-case scenario, namely to get the biggest star in the world,” a source said. “But they aren’t holding their breath on getting Taylor.”
The source continued, “Show host Ryan [Seacrest] has told higher-ups to go for someone that is out of the box if they do a complete overhaul. No one thought [former judge] Steven Tyler was going to be what he was and he was a fun choice. Right now every option is on the table, it will take a few months to figure out full details and a replacement, but Ryan is having them think outside the box.”
Jordin Sparks, who made AMERICAN IDOL history as the youngest contestant to win the show, has also expressed interest in the judging gig.
“Oh hiiii @AmericanIdol —I hear a seat opened up at the judges table!” Sparks tweeted. “I’m putting my name in the hat!”
Movieguide® previously reported on Perry:
Nearly six months ago, award-winning singer Katy Perry and actor Orlando Bloom welcomed their first daughter, Daisy Dove Bloom. According to Perry, parenthood has already impacted their lives as she prioritizes Daisy.
“She changed my life and still continues to change my life,” Perry reflected in an Instagram story. “I think that you realize that when you become a mother… you just have to focus on being a mom. And it’s not because you don’t love other people, it’s not because of anything besides you just want to be a great mom.”
Perry noted that her relationship with her daughter has become even more important to her than her successful music career.
“So a lot of stuff falls away when you become a mom and it is the best job in the world,” Perry said. “I highly recommend it when you’re ready.”
