How Cory Asbury’s Back Pain Strengthened His Reliance on God

Christian musician Cory Asbury explained how he came to trust Jesus with non-religious parts of his life, like his long-standing struggle with back pain.
Asbury had sought the advice of many medical experts for help with his back pain. One of the doctors he consulted recommended THC gummies, and while Asbury was reluctant to accept them, he ultimately did because he was desperate for relief.
The first time he took the gummies, he ended up getting a small high before crashing into one of the worst experiences of his life.
“So I come out of the bathroom, and it’s dark, it’s night. So out of our bedroom is, like, a hallway, right, and the hallway is super dark cause all the lights are off, and this is where it got bad, like it got real dark at this point,” Asbury said. “I looked out into the hallway and I felt like – I don’t know how to explain it other than this – I felt like I got sucked into the darkness for an eternity. Like legit, it felt like forever.”
“It felt like my entire life played out before me, like the worst anxiety and fear and, like, I don’t even know [how] to explain it. I don’t know how to say it. I was so scared and I was freaking out, like just freaking out. I was crying my eyes out, and I had anxiety, like I felt anxiety,” he continued. “I was so scared for the rest of what was happening, and I looked at my wife, and that was in the middle of her dealing with postpartum depression and anxiety, and I looked at her and I was like, I know how you feel now.”
“And I kept saying over and over, ‘I just wanted it to work. I just wanted it to work.’ And I just wanted it to fix me. I just wanted to feel better. I just wanted to fix my body,” Asbury added. “I wanted to fix the pain, and I wanted it to fix the pain so bad and in the middle of it, it did not fix me, in fact, it made my life considerably worse.”
It was in that moment that Asbury gave his back pain to the Lord and began to trust that whatever happened with it in the future, he would give it up to Jesus rather than try to take it into his own hands.
“All of a sudden, something hit me,” Asbury recalled. “I just kept saying, ‘Only Jesus for my pain. Only Jesus for my pain.’ He’s the only one that can touch it. He’s the only one that can either fix it or not fix it.”
“So here’s the deal, I might get healed, I might not, but Jesus is right there with me,” he added. “He’s in the middle of it with me. He’s walking with me through the whole thing, you know.”

The experience ended up inspiring Asbury’s song “Only Jesus For My Pain.”
The lyrics read:
I must have tried ‘most everything
It ended all the same
For good and bad, I realized

Only Jesus for my pain
“Right in the middle of this stuff where I was going to something else to try to fix me, and Jesus was like, “No, that’s not for you.’ I got only Jesus. That’s the only answer,” he said on YouTube.

Cory Asbury just released “Pioneer”—his first album in nearly three years—but the sound and stories told might surprise some listeners.
“Pioneer” is the culmination of the last three years of Asbury’s life. He has seen much change as his family moved from Michigan to a seven-acre farm in Nashville. He and his wife have also stepped away from full-time ministry for now—the first time they haven’t been on staff at a church in 19 years.
“We wanted to settle down somewhere for good,” Asbury told Relevant, explaining his family’s move. “I always dreamed of living in Nashville, because of the music scene. I finally convinced my wife to agree. We sold our house in Michigan in eight hours and bought a house here without seeing it in person. We saw it on Zillow, and we knew it was the one.”
Asbury and his wife had moved around a lot, and after five years in Michigan, the couple wanted to move somewhere warmer. Asbury was also eyeing Nashville because of the music that comes out of that city.
