INSIDE OUT-Inspired App Teaches Kids Emotional Awareness

By Movieguide® Contributor

Pixar and the Renée Crown Wellness Institute have teamed up to create an emotional learning app that will use characters from INSIDE OUT to teach kids about emotional awareness.

The app, called InsideU, uses clips and characters from INSIDE OUT to “facilitate the creative application of social and emotional learning skills to real-world dilemmas faced by elementary school-aged children.”

“By combining science, health education and brilliant animation, we have a golden opportunity to engage millions of young people to learn about their emotions and foster better relationships with others, during childhood and throughout their lives,” said Dr. Hubley, an assistant research professor at the Crown Institute.

The Crown Institute began working on programs to aid children in emotional education following the release of INSIDE OUT in 2015.

The movie has been praised by audiences and psychologists for its depictions of emotions like joy, sadness and anger.

“I think they really nailed it,” Dacher Keltner, a professor of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley,” told NPR. Keltner worked as a consultant to INSIDE OUT’s filmmakers.

He singled out a climactic scene where the character Sadness helps save the day, something he called “a nice statement about how important sadness is to our understanding of who we are.”

A portion of the Movieguide® review of INSIDE OUT reads:

Because of its themes, INSIDE OUT is a bit intellectual, so younger children may have a hard time understanding everything. However, it does a brilliant job with character dialogue and has a strong plotline. Also, the animation is excellent. INSIDE OUT has a strong moral worldview, with a beautiful emphasis on Joy. There’s also a strong redemptive message where sacrifice saves the day. That said, the movie’s unclear about whether our emotions control our thoughts or vice versa. Otherwise, however, INSIDE OUT is a delightful family movie.

Pixar recently debuted a trailer for INSIDE OUT 2, which will see new emotions join Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust.

“INSIDE OUT 2 returns to the mind of newly minted teenager Riley just as headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions!” a synopsis from Disney reads. “Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.”
