DC Superhero Movies to Release on Disney+, Hulu

DC Superhero Movies to Release on Disney+, Hulu

By Movieguide® Contributor

Three DC superhero movies will join Disney+ and Hulu’s streaming libraries.

The announcement came via a “Next on Disney+” YouTube video.

Per Comic Book Resources, “the original WONDER WOMAN movie is now streaming on Disney+ alongside SHAZAM! and its sequel, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS. This follows the merger between Disney+ and Hulu, and the superhero movies have a licensing deal with the latter. Notably, Disney+ won’t be the exclusive streaming home for these films, as each one is also available to watch on Max. It’s not yet clear if other DCEU movies will come to Disney+ in the near future, and which other titles that might include.”

Disney+, known for its Marvel superhero content, is adding the titles following its merger with Hulu.

Movieguide® reported:

Those who subscribe to both Hulu and Disney+ will now get the full service of Hulu within the Disney+ app.

Per Variety, “Starting Wednesday (March 27), the full Hulu on Disney+ experience is rolling out in the U.S. That means Hulu titles will be integrated into personalized content recommendations, sets and collections on Disney+. Under the previous ‘beta’ integration, which launched last December, Hulu content was presented in a separate hub on Disney+.”

“Its whole goal is to make happier subscribers and healthier subscribers, provide them convenience, deeper engagement, better retention and increase the value of the Disney bundle for our subscribers,” said Joe Earley, President of direct-to-consumer for Disney Entertainment.

Fans are wondering how long the movies will stay on the platforms and if any other DC Extend Universe flicks will be added.

“In the past, Hulu temporarily added multiple DC movies such as BIRDS OF PREY. However, that was removed after a while,” Coming Soon reported. “As of now, only 3 out of the 15 DCEU movies are currently available to stream on Hulu-Disney+. Whether more of them will come to Disney+ is hard to predict for now. However, since 3 are already there and MAX has started to lease its content to other streaming services (Hulu and Netflix), more DC movies could potentially stream on Disney Plus in the future.”

Movieguide® has reported that WONDER WOMAN, SHAZAM! and SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS all feature redemptive themes.

Part of the WONDER WOMAN review reads:

WONDER WOMAN is an exciting adventure that’s well made, with good directing, a thoughtful story and a powerful performance by Gal Gadot in the title role. Despite the movie’s inherent feminism and references to Greek gods, WONDER WOMAN has strong redemptive, moral elements promoting sacrificial love and containing an overarching Christological allegory. However, WONDER WOMAN also has lots of action, war violence and some off-color humor. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong caution.

SHAZAM! has a “Very strong moral, biblical worldview [that] stresses family, loving parenting, a positive portrayal of foster parents and selflessness, gratitude, and courage.” However, it is marred by some occult fantasy magic.

Movieguide®’s review for SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS reads:

SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS is exciting, but the movie’s real strength lies in the strength of its characters, including their humor. Thus, the movie contains some strong heartfelt, uplifting moments celebrating family and sacrifice. It also celebrates the Wisdom of Solomon. However, SHAZAM! FURY OF THE GODS promotes false Greek mythological notions of gods with supernatural powers. The movie contains 23 obscenities and light profanities, lots of action violence, and two scenes that promote leftist lies about accepting homosexual evil. As Proverbs 8:13 says, “To fear God is to hate evil.”
