Ryan Reynolds Shares Lesson He Hopes Daughter Learns From Michael J. Fox

Ryan Reynolds is sharing the lessons he’s learned from his friend Michael J. Fox with his daughters.

“Last year I watched BACK TO THE FUTURE with my 8-year-old daughter. It’s become her favorite film,” Reynolds wrote in an essay about Fox for TIME’s 100 Most Influential People list. “And for now, that’s enough for me—and for her. One more kid from one more generation sees what I saw.”

The DEADPOOL actor added that he is “lucky” to call Fox a friend before sharing the lessons he hopes she learns from him.

“I don’t need to teach my daughter the level of compassion Mike has mastered. Or teach her to tell stories the way Mike tells stories,” Reynolds explained. “I need to teach her that it’s OK to fall a lot. It’s the absolute best way to know you’re flying.”

Reynolds shares three daughters with wife Blake Lively—James, 9, Inez, 7, and Betty, 4—as well as another baby whose name and sex have not yet been announced.

The actor often talks about the important role fatherhood plays in his life, telling PEOPLE, “For me, the best time of my day is walking them to school and walking them back.”

Lively has also praised her husband for his commitment to their family. In a 2022 speech she gave before Reynolds was presented with the American Cinematheque Award, the actress shared, “Whether it’s from across the globe or a meeting across the street, he is hardwired to get home. If he came home from set not in his wardrobe, we would be very concerned. Soaked in mud, fake blood, real blood, prosthetic scars, superhero suits, tap shoes, or clown makeup—daddy always comes home.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Reynolds’ decision to step back from his career to focus on his kids:

Ryan Reynolds has decided to take a step back from life in the public eye – and for a very good reason! In a recent interview, Reynolds was asked about his “sabbatical” from acting.

His response? “The biggest thing for me, and I know you have kids as well, is that I don’t want to miss this time with my kids.”

Reynolds shares daughters James, 6, Inez, 5, and Betty, 2, with wife Blake Lively. The actor shared that he wants to be there to see them grow, and that this is the “perfect time” for him to take a break and that he wants to “live life like a normal human.”

“I want my kids to have a pretty normal schedule,” the actor said. “For many years when my wife Blake would shoot a film, I would not shoot a film and I would be with the kids and vice versa. So we would sort of trade off. We never really worked at the same time. But always we were away. So the kids were away too.”

He continued, “Now that they’re in school, they have a somewhat normal schedule. I think it’s totally important for their development and I really enjoy being a present dad. I love taking them to school in the morning, I love picking them up.”
