Mike Rowe Praises Chick-fil-A Summer Camp for Kids: ‘God Bless Them’

Mike Rowe is praising Chick-fil-A for launching a summer camp that takes kids behind the scenes at its popular restaurants.
“We are excited to announce our very first Chick-fil-A Summer Camp,” the Hammond, Louisiana franchise posted on Facebook.
Their post shared that campers will get to “spend some time with the Chick-fil-A Cow and Chick-fil-A Team Leaders” and “get a behind-the-scenes view of what it’s like to work at America’s favorite quick-service restaurant.”
“What did we think was going to happen when we took Home Ec, shop, and basic financial literacy out of the public schools?” Rowe said of the camp. “Sooner or later, somebody is going to step up and say, ‘we have to inculcate these ideas into the next generation.’”
He continued, “If Chick-fil-A is going to be part of leading that charge, God bless them. There’s somebody [that] has to step in to do this. Soft skills, basic common sense, all of that stuff is still for sale and sadly lacking.”
A Houston, Texas, Chick-fil-A has also run a popular summer camp for the last six years.
TODAY reported that, per a Chick-fil-A representative, “These camps do not turn a profit. Additionally, Chick-fil-A notes the camps are not part of a corporate program and that all of its restaurants are locally owned. Owners who live and work in the communities in which their restaurants operate create their own programs to engage with their neighbors.”

Chick-fil-A released a free digital cookbook – “Extra Helpings” – sharing recipes for discontinued items and raising awareness about food waste and food insecurity.
“Our goal for ‘Extra Helpings’ is not only to inspire individuals to reimagine their extra food into new, delicious recipes, but also spark conversations about the important issues of food insecurity and food waste,” said Brent Fielder, senior director of corporate social responsibility for Chick-fil-A, Inc.
“Participating Chick-fil-A Owner-Operators across the U.S. and Canada care for their neighboring communities through Chick-fil-A Shared Table food donations, collectively donating over 23 million meals in the past 11 years,” Fielder added. “While we’re pleased with this milestone, we know there is more work to be done, which is why we’re spotlighting this important issue.”
“Extra Helpings” includes 26 recipes for breakfasts, side dishes, dinners and desserts. The cookbook’s offerings include the restaurant’s discontinued coleslaw, a chicken and egg breakfast casserole, chicken pot pie and apple cobbler.
The cookbook was inspired by Chick-fil-A’s Shared Table program, which works with participating Chick-fil-A locations to address food insecurity and hunger across the U.S. and Canada.
