Bible Story or Movie Plot? Take a Guess!
By Movieguide® Contributor
Betty Rock and We Are Messengers frontman Darren Mulligan test their knowledge to see if they can identify if story synopses come from the Bible or mainstream movies.
“Woman uses her beauty and wit to save her people form a genocidal plot in a foreign empire.”
Though Rock and Mulligan both knew it was a Bible story right away, it took them a moment to identify that this summary was for the story of Esther.
“A young soldier rises from humble beginnings to challenge and defeat a seemingly invincible enemy in a historic battle.”
Rock and Mulligan were split on this one. Rock thought it was BRAVEHEART, while Mulligan believed it was David’s story. They ended up going with Mulligan, but the answer was BRAVEHEART as David was not a soldier when he faced Goliath.
“A baby is sent to earth and adopted by a humble family. Over time he discovers he has special powers and at the age of 33 he undertakes a mission to save the world from itself.”
For a moment, the pair thought this could have been a clever description of Jesus’ life, especially with the detail of the person’s age. However, they realized it was actually describing the story of SUPERMAN.
“A devoted father is distraught when his son goes missing and does everything in his power to find him.”
Rock believed it was Liam Neeson’s TAKEN series, while Mulligan considered if it could be describing the story of the prodigal son. After talking it over, they agreed it didn’t exactly line up with the prodigal son but still decided it came from a story in the Bible, though they couldn’t answer which one. They ended up being wrong, as it was a synopsis of FINDING NEMO.
“Several people with an almost supernatural connection experience some strange happenings including evil magicians and frogs falling from the sky.”
While they both recognized the plot’s similarity to the story of plagues in Exodus, they felt it better matched up with a Christian movie like the LEFT BEHIND series. The producers on the show admitted they had taken some liberties, but the synopsis was meant to be for Moses leading the Israelites out of Egypt.
“A man with a troubled past receives a second chance when he discovers an extraordinary ability to heal others.”
Rock and Mulligan were not very sure about this one and didn’t have an answer to give. It ended up being the plot for the GREEN MILE, which Mulligan had been thinking but didn’t say.
“In a time of turmoil, a king seeks guidance from a forbidden source to communicate with his wise predecessor which sets off a string of events that changes the life of the king forever.”
Rock thought this may have been THE LION KING but Mulligan immediately knew it was the story of King Saul visiting the medium at Endor to talk to Samuel after his death.
“A group of unlikely immigrants band together to stop a powerful tyrant and free the people from 100 years of oppression.”
Rock and Mulligan weren’t really sure on this one. They thought maybe it could be the story of Moses and Aaron again, but they weren’t immigrants. Then Rock thought it might be THE TERMINATOR but they ended up not really answering. The producers, yet again, admitted they took a few liberties, but the summary was for THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA.
“A wise man’s wisdom is tested when two women claim to be the mother of the same baby leading to a dramatic judgement.”
There was no question here. They both knew this was a story of King Solomon’s wisdom.
“A man is caught in a supernatural storm and must survive on a boat to find redemption and bring a message of hope to others.”
Rock thought this was CASTAWAY but Mulligan pointed out Tom Hanks was stranded from a plane crash. Mulligan then shared he thought it could be the story of Peter walking on water. But ended up going with THE LIFE OF PI, which was correct.
“A young apprentice must take his teacher’s place when mysteriously disappears from this world. He must remain unwavering in his faith as confronts kings to do the work of the Divine.”
The pair decided this was HARRY POTTER, and while that was a good guess, the correct answer was the story of Elijah and Elisha.
Getting more than half of the plots right, Rock and Mulligan’s final score was 6 correct out of 11. Though not a great score, the difficulty in identifying whether stories come from the Bible or not highlights the industry’s tendency to create its best stories around themes present throughout the Bible.
