Do Christians Actually Need to Go to Church?

Do Christians Actually Need to Go to Church?

By Movieguide® Contributor

Christian artist Danny Gokey spoke with the “Worship Leader” podcast about why it’s important to be part of a church, as well as his new album, “Sound of Heaven.”

“In these days when we live in a culture that is very influential and very powerful, you need another culture to offset that. And that is the body of Christ. That is the Church of God,” Gokey said.

He continued, “I always say it like this. We’re like fish in a fish tank, and it gets dirty in there, right? …Everything just rubs off on you. The culture. We live in this earth. It just rubs off on us. The attitudes, the mindsets, how social media plays into us. So, when you go to church, the Bible says that it’s the washing of water, the Word. So, it’s a beautiful thing to get refreshed.”

Gokey then spoke about his album “Sound of Heaven,” which attempts to embody the diversity that is present in heaven.

“I think there’s something for everybody in this project. You know, when we think of heaven, heaven is going to be a very diverse place,” he said. “I’m not sure if people think about that, but the diversity in heaven, because the scriptures, every nation, every tribe, every town. Right? Other people will be around the throne in heaven.”

The scripture Gokey is referencing is Revelation 7:9-10, which discusses heaven. It says, “After this I looked, and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were wearing white robes and were holding palm branches in their hands. And they cried out in a loud voice: ‘Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb.’”

Speaking in more detail about the album, Gokey shared, “We called it ‘Sound of Heaven’ because obviously this the lead track is called ‘Sound of Heaven.’ Heaven has a sound, and the earth has a sound. We must tap into the sound of heaven because it is a whole different — it just puts you on another playing field.”

He added, “We have worship on it. We have, you know, Christian, contemporary. We have Latin, Afrobeats. It’s pretty diverse. So, I like to say there’s something for everybody on this record.”

“Sound of Heaven” released on July 16 and is available on all streaming platforms.

“This project was really unique. As it turns out, it’s the reflection of all the different sides of me,” he told Fox News host Shannon Bream. “It’s, you know, very celebratory but…it starts with a prayer, like ‘Lord, what do you want to write through me?’ Because God is the greatest songwriter of all time. He’s the greatest artist of all time. We’re His children, so I’m thinking, like, I’m going right to the source.”

Movieguide® previously reported on the album:

Gokey explained how as he wrote the album, he noticed all of the songs sounded very different from each other.

“I knew that heaven was so diverse, and heaven is reflected with different sounds, so it all just came together,” he said.

The singer continued by reflecting on how beautiful diversity is and how we need to embrace the differences around us.

“Our thinking becomes small when we don’t embrace everything that’s around us. We become very small-minded, unfortunately. I just think when people get to heaven, they’re going to be shocked, you know, at how amazing and how diverse and how awesome [it is],” he told Bream.
