Will Chris Evans Reprise CAPTAIN AMERICA Role in New AVENGERS Movie?
By Movieguide® Contributor
Chris Evans is officially returning to the MCU!
Deadline revealed that the CAPTAIN AMERICA star is set to appear in AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo.
“At this point in time, the role isn’t entirely clear, but sources say Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson character will also return as Captain America,” the outlet explained. “Evans in the Captain America costume seems less likely. However, it wouldn’t be a shock if he reprises Steve Rogers.”
Others have theorized that he may appear as a different superhero. Before he was Captain America, Evans played Johnny Storm in FANTASTIC FOUR. He recently reprised the role for a cameo in DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE.
Evans has previously spoken about the possibility of his return to the MCU while appearing on THE VIEW.
“[I] would never say never,” the actor said but added that he is “very protective” of Steve Rogers/Captain America. “It’s a very precious role to me, so it would have to be just right.”

Downey Jr. has been vocal about his willingness to return to the MCU, telling Esquire, “I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against [Marvel head] Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
Most fans assumed he would come back as Tony Stark/Iron Man, but Downey Jr. shocked the world at this year’s Marvel presentation at San Diego Comic-Con when he revealed he would take on the role of FANTASTIC FOUR villain Dr. Doom in the upcoming AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY.
AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is expected to premiere May 1, 2026, with sequel AVENGERS: SECRET WARS coming the following year.
