Today’s generation will soon get to experience the revamped wonder of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, a movie originally brought by Dick Van Dyke, Sally Ann Howes and cast in 1968.
“Everyone’s favorite Mercedes chassis/World War I fighter plane is getting a tune-up as Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson’s Eon Productions are in development with Amazon MGM Studios on a reimagined film adaptation of the classic Dick Van Dyke family pic CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG,” Deadline reported Dec. 12. “Sources say that development is in early stages, with Eon and Amazon execs currently setting meetings with potential writers and directors.”
The movie is being made for theatrical release, another strategic move by Eon and Amazon MGM after their partnership on the James Bond franchise.

The classic movie’s synopsis reads: “A down-on-his-luck inventor turns a broken-down Grand Prix car into a fancy vehicle for his children, and then they go off on a magical fantasy adventure to save their grandfather in a far-off land.”
“The much-loved children’s story ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car’ was written by Bond author Ian Fleming in the mid-1960s, and adapted into a screenplay by Roald Dahl, Ken Hughes with Richard Maibaum,” Deadline said. “In 1968, the film was released in cinemas starring Van Dyke, directed by Ken Hughes and produced by Cubby Broccoli. Ken Adam handled production design and the music included the Oscar-nominated title song by Robert and Richard Sherman.”
In 1968, the movie was the 10th biggest film at the box office for the year. However, it still lost money as the budget was very high at $10 million.
Hopefully, this new movie will be worth the money put into it. The last Eon and MGM Bond movie made $774 million globally.
Dana Broccoli helped produce the stage version of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG. It was Oliver- and Tony-nominated and included six songs by the Sherman brothers. It’s currently on tour in the U.K.
The movie is in its earliest stages, so no release date has been announced yet.
