What Phase Two of Apple’s AI Rollout Means for You

Apple released the second set of Apple Intelligence features, rounding out the vision put forward when AI integration was first announced.

The largest feature, perhaps, is the fully reworked Siri which now communicates more conversationally and is backed up by ChatGPT. When users ask Siri a question that it cannot sufficiently answer, it will send it off the ChatGPT for support, after getting permission from the user.

“Apple users don’t need an OpenAI account to make use of the ChatGPT integration, but users can pay for upgraded versions of ChatGPT through Apple. Users can also access ChatGPT through some text menus,” NBC reported.

The integration of ChatGPT, however, extends beyond Siri. Apple’s writing systems now integrate the AI tool, allowing users to ask the chatbot for help when they are writing or for a summary of a chunk of text.

The new update also added a variety of fun visual tools including the much anticipated Genmoji feature that allows users to create any emoji they can think of through a simple prompt. Another art feature, the Image Playground, allows users to generate an image through a prompt in a variety of distinct art styles.

The inclusion of these features builds on the first phase of Apple Intelligence that was rolled out in October and incorporated many smaller AI features such as text summarization. The combination of these two updates completes the picture of Apple Intelligence laid out by Apple CEO Tim Cook when he announced the update in the summer.

“We’re thrilled to introduce a new chapter in Apple innovation. Apple Intelligence will transform what users can do with our products – and what our products can do for our users,” Cook said in June. “Our unique approach combines generative AI with a user’s personal context to deliver truly helpful intelligence. And it can access that information in a completely private and secure way to help users do the things that matter most to them. This is AI as only Apple can deliver it, and we can’t wait for users to experience what it can do.”

While major additions to Apple Intelligence are likely in the works, publicly, the company has only announced small improvements coming in the near future. The most notable is a Siri which can draw on a “user’s personal context” to offer more customized responses as well as stronger privacy settings empowered by AI.
