Texas QB Leans on Jesus’ Love to Stay Calm: He’s ‘There for Me’

Texas Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers led his team to a Peach Bowl victory over Arizona State University last week, and he relied on God for peace throughout the game.
“Ewers passed 28 yards to Golden for a touchdown on fourth-and-13 to force a second overtime, and Mukuba’s interception clinched a 39-31 victory after Texas squandered a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter and missed two field goal attempts that could’ve won it in regulation,” ESPN reported.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian told the media, “The one thing that I know about our group is when our backs are against the wall and when our best is needed, our best shows up time and time again. The resiliency that these guys showed today was something that, as a coach, makes you proud.”
After the game, Ewers discussed how his faith in Jesus enables him to stay calm in big moments.
“I think that we all stay calm, and…for all of us to stay calm, it kind of starts with me, and I just try to be that calm within the storm for all the guys,” he said. “And I think that my relationship with Jesus has helped me in that specific way of knowing that no matter what happens, that He’s going to be there for me, He’s still going to love me. And the reality of it is, is that that’s the reality of it.”

“Quinn’s a leader. He’s been leading us this whole time,” cornerback Jahdae Barron said after the game. “But, again, he know the Lord is his creator and he can give everything to Him. He can just go play fast. We’re all blessed to be here and blessed to play a game we love, but at the end of the day, you can’t make a mistake in God’s eyes.”
Ewers’ leadership and faith have encouraged his teammates to embrace Jesus, changing their game.
“It’s super cool to see the amount of guys that have really let God come into their hearts. And, you know, me being part of that, and Johnny being part of that, it’s kind of like a domino effect in the locker room,” Ewers said. “I think more guys are, you know, starting to come to Bible study, come to chapel, whatever it is…And I think that’s what grows us closer as well, just the amount of guys that are putting their faith in the Lord has just been really cool to see.”
“I mean, we pray after every practice as a team. And, you know, prayer is very powerful, and I really believe in prayer, and it’s just been cool to see how Jesus and God has just worked in our lives throughout this year. And I think that is also a testament to how we stay level-headed and poised throughout the entirety of a game,” he concluded.
