Pastor Explains How Christ Equips You to Conquer the Villain of Your Story

Sadie Robertson Huff and Pastor Jonathan Pokluda recently explored the reality of spiritual warfare and what protects us from the devil.

Although Pokluda was raised in church and attended Catholic school, he didn’t have a relationship with Jesus. As he grew up and found himself living in sin during his college years, he began to wrestle with the idea of God. Once someone invited him to church and he gave his life to Jesus, he began to learn about the reality of spiritual warfare.

“What I found is behind everything broken in our world is the enemy, it is the villain,” he explained. “I mean, behind every heartbreak, behind every anxiety, behind every fear, behind every cancer, behind every diagnosis…

He clarified, “I’m not saying that someone’s just anxious simply because of spiritual warfare. I am saying that I don’t think that will exist in heaven. And so, when the Fall happened in Genesis 3, that’s where all the broken things in our world come into play. The enemy, the villain, uses those things against us to try to keep us from Jesus.”

Thankfully if we believe in God, we have nothing to be afraid of. Pokluda explained that faith in God is how we defeat this enemy.

“The more you believe in God, the more you’re going to overcome the villain and temptation that you face,” he explained. “So, the solution then is to feed our faith so that our faith grows, that we would actually grow in our knowledge of and our love for God. And as we grow in our knowledge of and our love for God, we are protected from the enemy.”

And just as faith can defeat the enemy, Pokluda warned that sin is what invites him in.

“When you sin you let him in. When you give way…sin is not cute. It’s not just this thing that you’re going to get away with, whether it’s pornography or sexual promiscuity or immodesty or your language or your or drunkenness. Whatever you’re doing that you think is cute as you pursue it, you’re giving the enemy a gateway into your life,” he warned.

Pokluda’s warning reminds us of a truth Paul shared in Ephesians 4:26-28: “Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold. Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with their own hands, that they may have something to share with those in need.”

The pastor dives into this topic further in his new book “Your Story Has a Villain.”

“If we’re going to combat the villain, we have to remember of the battle that Christ fought on our behalf,” he said in a YouTube video promoting the book. “Jesus saved us from our sins by His finished work on the cross. We are at war, that we sit in a spiritual battle right now, but in that war we have peace. What I want you to know is that you have everything you need in Jesus Christ to overcome the villain.”
