Korn Guitarist’s Mission? ‘To Be a Light in the Dark’ for Christ

Nu-metal band Korn’s guitarist Brian Welch is on a mission to spread the name of Jesus with all he comes into contact with.
Following his conversion to Christianity, Welch left the band in 2005. But he eventually felt God calling him to return and made the move in 2013, only after “three close friends agreed” with his decision, Crosswalk Headlines said.
“I’ve checked and double-checked and confirmed and quadruple-confirmed that I’m supposed to be there,” the guitarist told Church Leaders of his position with Korn. “So I don’t care what anybody says. God just puts his hand on it and I just see Him all the time. So that’s all I’m focused on.”
He’s faced a lot of backlash from other Christians because of his decision to rejoin the band. “I’ve got this odd calling where a lot of Christians don’t understand it and write me off,” he explained.
But he holds on to God’s mission for him: “Don’t be afraid to be a light in the dark.”
“And He revealed to me through myself, through my own heart, and then through people I trusted in leadership, that He never meant for me to never go back [to Korn]. He just meant it wasn’t the right time. He started to reveal through counsel that the time was now. And so that’s what led to [me rejoining Korn],” Welch said.
Korn’s music is “crazy, but mainly the lyrics are about pain,” he said previously. “And they’re coming from a real and raw place. People need hope. There’s addictions like crazy in that world. There’s depression. It’s been a lot of suicide stories happening. What better place [for me] to be, having the meaning of life that I carry? You know, I know the answer for the meaning of life.”
Welch personally understands depression and freedom from it through Christ.
“I [have] struggled with depression for most of my life,” he explained. “And I had stopped taking all depression medication when I came to Christ, [because] I was just so high on the reality that He showed me He is real.”
“But after about a year,” he added, “the depression came back, and I didn’t want to go back on the medication.”
Welch jumped back on the medication but saw several side effects from it. It took him two years to fully get off.

“When I finally stopped all of it, it was like I took a bunch of steps backwards,” he admitted. “I felt like I can’t control my emotions [and] I’m treating people wrong.”
Welch then asked God for forgiveness.
“He’s still healing me. So that stuff that maybe the medication just put a Band-Aid on, [God] wants to deal with that stuff now — so I’m just letting him. So that’s what I’m learning right now,” the guitarist said.
“Even though I mess up a lot,” he continued, “he just keeps doing new things. There’s a balance of suffering and just increase in blessings every year…all the hard times are worth it. He makes everything worth it.”
