THE CHOSEN Actor Details His Character’s ‘Real Growth’ in Season 5
By Movieguide® Contributor
THE CHOSEN actor Alaa Safi is sharing his character’s development as the show’s fifth season prepares to premiere.
Safi, who plays Simon the Zealot, told Church Leaders that his character “goes from superhero conditioning to the most humble version of a person.”
“And that’s real growth,” he added.
The actor explained that he was initially drawn to the role of Simon because he was “troubled” and “seeking a sense of purpose out of the pain.”
“He’s the guy who needs to learn how to go nonviolent about everything in his life,” Safi continued, adding that he began “bracing, preparing, building himself, strengthening himself, and it’s all based on a fearful approach to the world and life.”
He said that after meeting Jesus, his character begins to question his own views, as Jesus “strips me away from my past life, from the dagger, symbolizing everything I believed so hard so far.”
“That powerlessness — which doesn’t mean weakness — is starting to appear and to be a thing, which grows even stronger after,” Safi concluded.

Season 5 of THE CHOSEN will premiere in theaters in three parts, starting March 28. The following two parts debut on April 4 and 11, respectively.
“This is our most kick-butt content yet because we cover joy, pain, loyalty, betrayal, excitement, anger, sadness, and fear, sometimes within one episode,” the show’s creator Dallas Jenkins shared. “The triumphal entry, the turning of the tables, the betrayal by Judas, and the Last Supper…all set against the biggest backdrop and sets we’ve ever used with a new widescreen format that demands to be seen on the big screen. But of course, we continue our obsession to humanize and authenticate everyone involved.”
“The table is set,” he concluded. “I can’t wait for you to see this in theaters.”
THE CHOSEN recently signed a deal with Amazon to exclusively distribute the show, including theatrical releases for the show’s final two seasons.
“For several years, the team at Amazon MGM Studios has proved over and over they’re passionate about this show and our fans,” Jenkins said in a statement about the partnership. “They’re going to make us better and get the show to more people, and I can’t wait to build this relationship.”
