Star Surfer’s Faith-Forward Dating Advice Could Change Your Life

Star surfer Bethany Hamilton is sharing why it’s so important to practice sincere dating.
“My older brother…consistently emphasizes the biggest decision you will make in your life is who you will marry and so to not date with lackadaisicalness, to not just have a fun time, but to really approach this area of your life with sincerity, focus, thoughtfulness,” Hamilton shared in a Feb. 7 Instagram video that has “Do not date with no direction!” labeled on it.
“Oh how dating can truly wreak havoc on someone’s life. Yet the culture is saying…Date and have fun. Experience lots of people! Or get to college and sleep with someone on the football team and you get in the sorority. It’s not for the faint of heart,” she captioned the video.
Hamilton also speaks about mindful dating on her blog, where she adds that it provides physical and emotional protection when you set boundaries.

“I challenge any of you reading this who are in those years of courtship to really think about what it is that you want in a relationship and what you don’t want,” she said. “I encourage you to be courageous in the start of relationships about the boundaries and intentions you wish to have. I challenge you to be brave, honest and to protective yourself… You will not regret it!”
In 2022, relationship expert Jackie Brewton came to speak at one of Hamilton’s Ohana Mother and Daughter conferences. Hamilton shared her favorite quote of Brewton’s from the conference: “Don’t sacrifice what you want most for what you want in the moment.”
“While the Bible doesn’t specifically talk about guidelines for dating, God’s Word is quite clear about abstaining from promiscuity (Romans 13:13),” Hamilton explained, “and becoming one flesh only within the marriage relationship (Genesis 2:24) As followers of Christ, [my husband], Adam, and I both knew that waiting for physical intimacy until we were married was not only God’s plan to protect us, but also His great gift to us.”
